I came across a disgusting video of a young girl in a wheelchair being abused a group teen thugs and someone was taking a video rather that helping her. An adult stood in the disance watching it happen when she should have stopped the girl being pummelled. She did not.
The difference between what the thugs are doing and what Canada is doing with its MAID program is that the thugs are obvious in their anti-disability sentiments. The Canadian government and many provincial governments are more sophisticated in their anti-disability actions or inactions. The message is the same. People with disabilities are not welcome. Thugs use their fists (like the ones in the video below while governments, organizations, policy makers, the lack of supports, isolation and poverty lead to requests for medical assistance in dying (MAID)— otherwise known as assisted suicides of people who are defeated. Isolation and lack of social supports, substandard housing (or lack of any housing) with no end in sight or hope for the future, can do that to a person. Clever bureaucratic wordsmiths can conjure up flowery euphemisms to make despicable indifference or anti-disability bigotry sound altruistic, even noble. It's a matter of degree and subtlety (or lack of it). Thugs use violence against unwanted disabled teen; governments and health professionals use civilized, empathic language that sounds so caring and liberating. The fiendish pied pipers of death lead weary and defeated sick and disabled people to a witches cauldron of poison.
Euthanasia and medical assisted suicide are wickedness presented as virtue.
